Shopify wholesale: tiered pricing, wholesale portals and apps

To sell wholesale on Shopify you have two main routes: native Shopify B2B, now available beyond Plus, with companies, catalogs, volume pricing and payment terms, or a wholesale app that layers trade pricing onto your store. A custom build comes in when wholesale depends on your ERP, when buyers need fast ordering from large catalogs, or when your pricing and minimums are more complex than either option handles.

PlanBasic, Grow, Advanced (with limits) and PlusDepends on the app

Since April 2, 2026, stores on Basic, Grow and Advanced get up to 3 active B2B catalogs, company profiles, payment terms, volume pricing and vaulted cards. Plus adds unlimited catalogs, direct assignment of catalogs to companies and locations, and partial payments and deposits. See Shopify B2B for the full comparison.

If you're starting today, try native B2B first. It's built into checkout, reporting and the Admin API, and it doesn't depend on discount tricks.

Tiered pricing

Tiered pricing means different things, and each has a different tool:

  • Quantity breaks per product for trade customers ("1–9 at 10.00, 10–49 at 9.00, 50+ at 8.00"): volume pricing in a B2B catalog.
  • Customer tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold trade accounts with different price levels): one catalog per tier. With 3 or fewer tiers this works on non-Plus plans. More needs Plus.
  • Quantity breaks for consumers, or breaks across mixed products ("any 12 bottles"): a discount. Native discounts cover simple cases. A discount Function covers the rest. See Shopify Functions.
  • Order-value tiers ("5% off over 500, 10% off over 1,000"): an order discount, native or via a Function.

Minimum orders

  • Per-variant minimums and case packs: B2B quantity rules (minimum, maximum, increment).
  • Minimum order value or mixed-case minimums: a cart and checkout validation Function that blocks checkout with a clear message, only for B2B buyers if you want.

A wholesale portal that trade buyers like

Trade buyers order differently from consumers. They know the SKUs, reorder the same things and order in bulk. The pieces that make a wholesale portal work:

  • Sign-in and pricing: B2B buyers sign in with their customer account (email and a one-time code) and see their catalog prices.
  • Quick order: a table of products or variants with quantity inputs, or paste-in SKUs and quantities, instead of browsing product pages.
  • Reorder: previous orders turned back into a cart in one click.
  • Account area: invoices, payment status, credit available, delivery addresses per location, via customer account UI extensions.
  • Approvals: orders above a limit routed to a manager at the buyer's company.

Some of these exist in themes or apps. Anything that depends on your ERP, such as credit available, invoices or contract items, is a custom build.

When a custom wholesale app makes sense

  • Trade prices, credit and accounts live in your ERP and must sync automatically. See ERP integration.
  • Your catalog is large and buyers need SKU-based quick ordering.
  • Minimums, pricing or approvals follow rules no app expresses.
  • You're replacing a wholesale app and moving to native B2B, and need a migration of customers into companies and prices into catalogs.

Moving from a tag-based wholesale app to native B2B

Many stores started wholesale with an app that gives tagged customers a discount. Moving to native B2B is worth planning carefully:

  1. Group customers into companies. Several buyers from one business become contacts of one company, with locations for each ship-to address.
  2. Turn discount rules into catalogs. A "wholesale 40% off" rule becomes a catalog with a percentage price adjustment. Fixed trade prices become price list entries.
  3. Recreate minimums as quantity rules or a validation Function.
  4. Set payment terms per company location instead of manual invoicing.
  5. Test with real accounts: sign in as a buyer, check prices, minimums, terms and checkout.
  6. Tell buyers how to sign in and what changed, then switch off the old app's pricing.

Decision checklist

  • How many price levels do trade customers have? Per-customer prices mean Plus.
  • Do you need payment terms, deposits or partial payments?
  • Which minimums apply: per item, per case, per order value?
  • Do buyers order from product pages, or do they need quick order and reorder?
  • Where do trade prices and credit limits come from?

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up wholesale on Shopify?

The native route is Shopify B2B: create companies for your trade customers, a B2B catalog with wholesale prices and volume pricing, and payment terms. Since April 2026 this is available on the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans as well as Plus, with some limits outside Plus. The alternative is a wholesale app, which typically uses customer tags and discounts.

What's the best Shopify wholesale app?

It depends on your plan and needs. If native B2B covers your pricing and terms, you may not need an app at all. If you need features it doesn't have, such as wholesale registration forms, order minimums or quick order forms, compare apps on how they apply prices (catalogs vs discounts), how they handle checkout, and whether they work with your plan's B2B features.

How do I do tiered pricing on Shopify?

For B2B buyers, use volume pricing in a B2B catalog: price breaks by quantity per variant. For consumers, use a discount: native discounts cover simple cases, and a discount Function or an app that uses one can express more complex tiers, such as mixed-product quantity breaks or tiers by customer group.

What is a Shopify wholesale portal?

A place where trade customers sign in and order at their prices. With native B2B it's your normal store: B2B buyers sign in with their customer account and see their catalog, prices and payment options. Some merchants add a quick order form, reorder lists and account pages for invoices, which are built with theme or customer account extensions.

Can I have minimum order quantities for wholesale customers?

Yes. B2B catalogs support quantity rules (minimum, maximum and increment per variant). For rules such as a minimum order value or a mixed-case minimum, a cart and checkout validation Function can block checkout with a clear message until the rule is met.
